This study is ridiculous

It may be the other assorted wedding stresses getting to me, with a week and a half to go, but this USA Today article about a "study" regarding whether or not brides should take their husband's name about pushed me over the edge, possibly because I'm getting married in less than two weeks and still haven't decided what name I'll be using to sign the marriage license. No, I'm not kidding.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-08-11-change-name_N.htm?loc=interstitialskip

Okay, first of all. 815 people is an absolutely pathetic sample size, particularly if a large portion of the sample size is from Utah, as the author of the article seems to imply. (Researchers from the University of Indiana and the University of Utah are responsible for the study.) No offense to the state of Utah, but that particular population is hardly representative of...well...most of the rest of the country. And this is coming from someone who tends to lean slightly conservative much of the time.

Second of all, why is it anyone else's business whether or not I choose to change my name? I've spent the last two and a half years going back and forth on this issue.

On the "for name change" side, we have the fact that I'm only 23 and haven't really established myself in a career too deeply under this name, combined with the further fact that I'm a relatively traditional type of person who had expected all along to totally just change my name when I got married. And then, honestly, the only one that has much of any sway with me -- I'd really rather not have to explain to the teachers of my eventual kids that, yes, these are my children, and no, we don't have the same last name. (However, based on what many of my college classmates are doing, I doubt this will be as much of an issue by the time our generation starts having kids in school. Purely anecdotal evidence, I have no research to back this up...or even "research.")

But on the "against name change" side, we have the fact that I actually really like my name. A lot. (And I definitely like it better than Josh's, a fact which he's fully aware of.) It's the one that's on my college diploma, not to mention about a year and a half worth of published articles and graphics. Plus, it seems like a ridiculous amount of work to have to have my entire identity changed over to a last name that, quite honestly, even my fiance isn't terribly attached to -- for a couple different reasons, it's not even the one he was using when we started dating. Shallowly, I also don't care much because either way I'll still have to spell it out every time someone needs my last name. (But when your name is Caitlyn or a variation thereof, you get used to that anyway.)

And then there is the lovely "screw it, I'll just hyphenate it" approach that I am seriously considering, because it lets me keep my name and solves the whole issue of not having the same last name as eventual kids. However, I'm still not so sure about that, either.

I fully accept that there will be relatives who, regardless of my choice on this matter (and yes, it is my choice, and Josh told me he absolutely doesn't care what I decide as long as I still marry him), will call me by his last name. It really doesn't bother me.

Third, and finally, this is the part that disturbs me:

<quote>Hamilton says that about half of respondents went so far as to say that the government should mandate women to change their names when they marry, a finding she called "really interesting," considering typical attitudes towards government intervention.</quote>

It sounds to me like half of the respondents of this survey need to butt out. If I don't want to change my name, that discussion is between me and my fiance. If I do want to change my name, that discussion is between me and my fiance. The government has no place in it and it kind of creeps me out that people think they should. If we wanted to change our names to Caitlyn and Joshua Awesome (with their kids Totally and Freaking, obviously; oh, HIMYM), that's our business.

Some of the comments on that article also disturb me...the ones along the vein of "if you don't take my name you'd better give back my ring," in particular, and start sort of making marriage seem like a property exchange. Because it's totally still 1500, you guys.

Anyway, to sum up my ridiculous, overlong rant, USA Today's journalistic standards are disappointing, this study is disturbing, and I'm 95% certain that when I wake up on August 23, I'll still have the same name that my parents put on my birth certificate. I mean, there's always a chance I'll change my mind on that, but the point is, I'm the one changing my mind.

Okay, so I haven't updated in like...months. And I fail. And I finally do, and it's to come asking my wonderful friends list for help, because you guys are awesome.

We opted to not pay someone to be the DJ for our wedding, because 1) Josh's dad has access to the lights and the speakers, 2) iTunes works pretty much just as well, and 3) we're pretty much broke and trying to do this wedding thing (which, ohmygosh, three weeks to go) as inexpensively as possible. So.

What songs would you actually want to dance to at a wedding reception? Any and ALL suggestions are welcome, because seriously, so far I have like an hour of music and that's not going to cut it.

I...am not wearing my glasses right now. This could end terribly.

First of all: Why do all of my so-called "weekends off" turn into "weekends off where actually I go sleep somewhere that isn't my bed so that I can sacrifice my time to planning a wedding"? Seriously? This is ridiculous. You know what we actually need to get married? A piece of paper and someone to sign it. I work a block from the courthouse. If we didn't already have a ton of deposits down, I'd be so tempted. Screw the floral "consultations" and the dress fittings and fighting with my mom about inviting people I DON'T EVEN LIKE. (I swear to GOD, I am standing firm on this one. We aren't inviting other people's adult children, I don't care if this one is basically codependent. I. can't. stand. her. And the best part is, NEITHER CAN MY MOTHER. ARGHHHH.)

My next weekend off will be spent roadtripping to Ohio State for college gymnastics regionals. And the wedding bag is STAYING. HOME.

Second of all: WHY can't I sleep right now? Oh, because I'm used to hearing sirens every once in a while, and Josh's computer whirring, and random street noises, or whatever, and suddenly it's really quiet and I have been up for nearly 21 hours and I STILL CAN'T SLEEP.

Oh, and I just watched three episodes of How I Met Your Mother in a row in an attempt to fall asleep. And then I skipped way ahead and watched "Sandcastles in the Sand." And it was awesome.

Third of all: I got pulled over by a state trooper less than 15 miles into my TWO AND A HALF HOUR DRIVE because one of my tail lights was burned out, and as if that weren't enough, the fix it ticket also includes my cracked windshield, which I was NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR, considering I was ON MACKINAC ISLAND AT THE TIME. I left home, my car was all nice and in one piece, mostly, and when I came back, GIANT POTENTIALLY $300 WINDSHIELD CRACK. You know what you can't have on Mackinac Island? WINDSHIELDS. Or rather, the cars they are attached to.

Fourth of all?: THANKS A LOT WAKE FOREST, FOR SCREWING OVER MY BRACKET FOR THE NEXT THREE ROUNDS.
Dear Entertainment Weekly,

Normally, we are like BFF. I was super excited to get a whole year subscription for Christmas, because you are usually made of an hour's worth of fluffy (but not trashy) entertainment. And OH THE MOVIE PREVIEWS. AMAZING.

However, we are currently in a fight. You know why? Because the Oscars are next weekend. And I open up my mailbox and what is on the cover?

TWILIGHT. AGAIN. I am so sick of scary RPattz and Kristen Stewart staring up at me from the internets at large, I don't need it in my mailbox too. The sad thing is, the inside looks so great! Jack Bauer! Oscar predictions! Carrie Underwood at the Grammys! AMAZING RACE REVIEW! Too bad I'll have to rip the cover off to be able to pick the thing up without screaming.

And this after the Obama cover two weeks ago. If I wanted politics, I'd subscribe to Newsweek. I get enough of that shit at my job. At the newspaper. Oh, and the Lost cover last week? Love the story, but you just HAD to feature Kate and Jack, didn't you? I think I speak for a great deal of Lost fans when I say just about any other characters -- ever, including the dead ones (unlike Kate and Jack who I pretty much just wish were dead characters) -- would have been both more interesting and less obnoxious. In my experience, people don't care nearly as much about Kate and Jack as the producers of Lost seem to think. Seriously.

I expect a fabulous Oscar related cover next week, or I'm going to be sad. Come on, EW, get it together!

No love,
Me.

(I did not send this letter, obviously, but I am tempted to send a shorter, more civilized one about how maybe, just maybe, we should let Twilight go for awhile. You know, until there's actually a new movie coming out or something. Just a thought.)

Okay, I fail at posting. Fail, fail, fail. These pictures are like a month old. It's old news. Whatever. Still deserves its own post, because, hi, it was Nationals and I was there.

The day started veeeeery early when Eric and I left Adrian at a little after 7:30 a.m. to make sure we didn't miss any of the first session, which was originally scheduled to start at 11:20. Eric had gotten an email saying it would start at 11, so our goal was to get there with plenty of time to find parking. (Google Maps says it's just over 2 and a half hours from my apartment to the arena. It's a pretty fair assessment.) We hit a little snow coming into Cleveland, but otherwise, not a bad drive.

YAY LOOK, IT'S THE CLEVELAND SKYLINE!!! In the foreground, Eric's new GPS, which was several levels of amazing, especially on the way out of the arena, where our on ramp was closed, and then the GPS recalculated and tried to make us drive onto a CLOSED bridge (if we had followed its instructions, we probably would have fallen several hundred feet into the Cuyahoga River...like that episode of "The Office" only deadlier), but it got us out of the city eventually. Anyway.

The arena, as seen from the parking garage. We lucked out and got $5.00 parking for the WHOLE DAY because we were in the area by 10:30. When we came out after the pairs/dance session, the same structure was charging $10 for people arriving for the ladies long. (Sort of a scary parking structure, by the way. Low clearance, half under construction...in retrospect it would have been safer to pay the extra $5 for the other lot. Oh well.)

I literally about went into shock when we found our seats. Because while our tickets said ROW 1, I was fully expecting it to mean row 1 of the bleachers and not the chairs, or...something, I don't know. Row 1 actually meant "you can literally put your feet on the boards." I kind of almost died.

In a hilarious note, a woman came and sat near us at one point and said something about it being her "famous mother's seat." Her mother was the woman that dropped the ball of yarn on the ice the night before. Ooops.

These guys (I think they're junior dancers) had Blades of Glory costumes for Halloween, decided to bring them, and then apparently talked someone into letting them skate around before the first Zamboni break after the earliest pairs. HILARIOUS.

Jessica Rose Paestch and Drew Meekins

Laura Lepzinski and Ethan Burgess, first of all, had very classy costumes. Second of all, they had by far the performance of the lower groups of pairs, and not just because they didn't collapse every other lift they tried.

No pictures of the early dance group, because it's hard to know what to take pictures of with dance...although there was one costume I really should have snapped a picture of. It involved a hood. It was more than slightly horrifying.

"OMG, can you believe we have these seats?"
"Yeah, too bad we have to LEAVE them now."

Eric and I spent like 15 minutes trying to decide if we could get away with not moving to our ticketed seats for the second session. The seats around us were mostly empty, and it wasn't like anyone was checking...but finally we decided that, since the tickets hadn't come up as available when we'd ordered ours, there would probably be people showing up. And there were, so it's a good thing we moved. We could have gotten away with the same section but 6th or 7th row, but the visibility was actually probably worse.

Evora/Ladwig had the best skate that was apparently not shown on NBC (a huge check AGAINST NBC). They skated beautifully, and Amanda was completely in tears at the end, and I have to admit to being a little teary for them. They were fantastic.

Vise/Trent

Castile/Okolski

McLaughlin/Brubaker...the last picture gives a pretty good idea of what happened to all the free strawberry stress balls that Smuckers was handing out.

Yankowskas/Coughlin

Inoue/Baldwin

Denney/Barrett were SO excited after their free skate. Their scores got some pretty strong boos.

And the final results before the free dance! And how better to signal the start of the free dance than...

LASER LIGHT SHOW AND VIDEO MONTAGE!

I was bound and determined to get SOME form of Tanith and Ben picture, even if it was just during a video recap. The clips were going really really fast, though, so this was the best I could do.

AWWW.

They had a clip of Tanith and Ben introducing the free dance. (Keauna and Rockne introduced the pairs long.) Right after this, I checked my voice mail and there was a message from Karen telling me to not be too sad that Tanith and Ben weren't there. Sigh.

I didn't get many of the 2nd to last group to post, just because I'm not sure which was which, but...Matthews/Gislason were pretty easy to remember. I mean...the costumes. (Also the guys in the stands with the Canadian flags and the sign that said EH!)

Navarro/Bommentre! I don't remember seeing Kim and Brent's free dance before then, and it was so entertaining. YAY.

Hubbells.

And then...a bunch of pictures of Meryl and Charlie.

(This is when I realized my camera had a DIGITAL zoom as well as the optical zoom that I'd been using.)

AWWWWWWW.

Summerset/Gilles.

Samuelson/Bates. We tried to call Rachel (who knows Evan) and tell her to watch for them on TV, but she had changed her phone number. Oh well.

I forgot to take a picture of the scoreboard afterwards...boo. We stayed around hoping they'd do the medals ceremony afterwards, but apparently they waited until after the ladies, which was so annoying. I really wanted to see Meryl and Charlie on the podium! They should keep the medals podium right after the event where they're earned.

We grabbed dinner afterwards at a sports bar type place next to the arena (cheap and delicious), and then I absolutely had to get some pictures of these awesome signs:

And then, Eric humored my instance of walking around HALF THE GIANT ARENA in the cold to get a picture of this ginormous sign that I flailed all over when we drove in. I almost froze my fingers off because I'd left my mittens in the car, and the picture didn't even turn out that well, but oh well.

GIANT TANGO TANITH.

On the drive home, Karen kept us updated on the MSU gymnastics team scores, and we got back to my apartment just in time to watch the last group of ladies' long programs on NBC.

All in all?
Just a quick question for all the skating fans on my friends list.

Could someone please explain to me the Faiella/Scali love? I don't get it. Granted, I haven't seen Europeans because IceNetwork is basically saying "we'll get to it when Nationals are over...or something" but I keep watching them rise in the standings without understanding it AT ALL.

Then again, it's ice dancing, so I guess understanding is sort of optional.

Thoughts?
Not to repeat what everyone else EVER is saying?

It's REALLY REALLY COLD. Like -12 without the wind chill cold. (-22 with, not that it matters.)

So, I am curled up on my couch watching the Canadian figure skating championships (OMG US NATIONALS IN A WEEK) and drinking some delicious hot chocolate, since I just got out of work like 15 minutes ago. (Also, today I got an email from IceNetwork, informing me that they will basically be taking over my entire life for the next week starting Jan. 19, as they air every skater in every discipline at every level. I love/hate you, IceNetwork. I still haven't watched the GPF.)

I actually almost cried. (It wouldn't be the first time today, so I was already kind of at the edge of that happening, but still.)

The only good thing is the fact that it will be quite fabulous to see Meryl and Charlie win in person, because...yeah, no one will come close. But still.... *sad flail*

Today has been pretty awful, actually. The only thing saving it is that by this time tomorrow, I have will have hopefully watched MSU beat UM and Illinois in gymnastics, and I will be sitting at Rum Runners with some seriously awesome people. However, thanks to 600 mg of ibuprofen, a cold compress, and a whooole lot of sleep, it's gone now though, yay!

Hey. Didn't we all kind of decide that a waltz, whether it's a "jazz waltz" or not, was not an appropriate rhythm for this year's OD and the team that selected it because "Russians don't do swing" or whatever excuse they pulled out (which, the Russian teams at Skate Canada did a pretty nice job with it, actually, awful costumes not withstanding) should probably be penalized for not sticking to the correct rhythm?

Yeah. SO MUCH FOR THAT. They're still leading overall and barely lost the OD. I do not approve. Why bother having an OD rhythm at all if people can just pick whatever they want? Call it a short program and leave it. (Though I do have to admit that thanks to the bizarre time zone conversions with Beijing I haven't watched it yet, so maybe my disapproval is premature, but since I hate everything they put on the ice, I figure it's not like I keep an open mind about them anyway.)

What do I approve of though? JEREMY ABBOTT.

Additionally, I think it was very, very cruel for USFSA to send this pairs team of Guillen/Curzon to this competition. I mean...they literally finished 40 points behind the rest of the field. That's pretty painful.

So why did I have no time to watch Skate Canada this weekend? This is why:

IT WAS AMAZING. The stadium was so loud.

Unfortunately, that may be the last picture my much-loved Canon SD600 ever takes. Almost right after, the lens got stuck, flashed a "Lens Error: Restart camera" error, and made some grinding noises until the lens went back in. Now it won't do anything at all except flash the error message, and all the Google searches in the world basically have told me I'm screwed. The camera's no longer under warranty, and I can't be too upset since I got over a year of pretty abusive use out of it. (I'm amazed it made back from Europe in one piece, let alone that I didn't accidentally drop it into Lake Huron this summer.) We're going to attempt to take it apart and get the stuff out of the lens gears, but if not, the updated version of the same camera is just over half what I paid for my current camera.

I just didn't want to buy a new camera, that's all.

Does anyone have any recommendations that I should consider for point-and-shoot cameras around the $200 range? Right now I'm looking at the Canon SD1100, which is basically identical to the camera I have now...except it comes in pink. :)

Today was pretty unproductive at work, and I nearly got into a car accident at the post office, because parking at the Adrian post office is 1) at a premium and 2) parallel, and no one knows how to drive. Someone wanted my parking spot, and rather than giving me room to pull out, they decided to stop about where my hood ended, so there was no way I was getting out.

Oh, and did I mention my car doesn't have a functioning horn?

Fortunately, a lineup of cars in the street started to get angry and honked at the idiot driver, and I pulled out of there without having to resort to bumper cars.

Also, the Adrian post office sucks. Never mind the parking situation, there's always a huge line, and it's crazy inefficient in there. I've been there three times and I'm always in line for like 15 minutes. It's not that big a post office.

However. I was at the post office for one very important reason that made me not complain too much:

Booking a wedding photographer. SCORE.

See, I cared about something besides the MSU/UM game (WHICH WE WON, IN CASE YOU MISSED THAT FOR WHATEVER REASON) today.

There will be a full best and worst dressed report after this competition ends. And oh, it will be good. (I apologize in advance to a skater that I adore who...is definitely on the worst dressed list. I'M SORRY, I HAVE TO.)

I missed the pairs long and the original dance due to work, so I'll go back and watch it all tomorrow.

I'm too lazy tonight to post results. I'll edit them in later or something.

The ladies all seemed to have really cute reactions when they found out they were in the lead. (Except Rachel Flatt, who clearly recognized that her 3-3 had not been credited and was disappointed.) Mirai's "WHAT??" made me burst out laughing.

Miki's costume is the WORST, you guys. I don't even have words for this thing. It's bad. BAD.

I don't remember Yu-Na showing so much personality and expression prior to this year. This short program suits her very well. And she about had a heart attack when she saw the score. I screwed up on my fantasy picks again, thinking Miki looked great in practice. What the hell is my problem, I should have KNOWN.

I was going to add in stuff about the men's competition, but now I'm not, the end.
